Active coronavirus cases increase, hospitalizations around 1,000

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Active coronavirus cases in West Virginia have surpassed 21,000, according to the state Department of Health and Human Resources.

The agency updated its statewide coronavirus dashboard on Sunday.

Officials have confirmed 21,717 active cases, of which 5,256 cases are new. The number of deaths related to the coronavirus remains 5,609 as officials did not confirm any additional deaths before publishing Sunday’s report.

The agency also reported 997 hospitalizations related to the pandemic, in which 68.5% of patients are unvaccinated. Officials also noted 216 people in intensive care units and 118 patients on ventilators.
