Clay County Schools makes face masks optional

CLAY COUNTY, W.Va. — Masks in Clay County Schools will become optional on Thursday.

The school system announced Wednesday the policy change, citing declining positive case numbers.

School wellness centers will continue to offer testing, and schools will still have masks available. Officials will also continue to report case numbers daily and weekly.

“With this transition, it is more important than ever before to monitor symptoms daily and not come to work or school if you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19,” officials said in a release.

Clay County Schools joins the list of school systems that have changed mask mandates because of changes in case trends. The Cabell County Board of Education voted Monday to drop its mandatory mask requirement, and Monongalia County School’s new policy on optional facial coverings will take effect next Wednesday.
