Marshall unveils 2022 football schedule with full Sun Belt Conference slate

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Two weeks after Conference USA released their 2022 football schedule with Marshall featured on it, Marshall unveiled their schedule for what figures to be their first season in the Sun Belt Conference.

The Thundering Herd is moving forward with plans to compete in the Sun Belt in the 2022-2023 academic year while CUSA has entered litigation to hold Marshall, Old Dominion and Southern Mississippi to their original agreements.

“Our organization is excited about the opportunity to compete in the Sun Belt Conference,” said Marshall head coach Charles Huff. “We have a lot of work to do to prepare for the upcoming challenges. Our immediate focus is on what we need to do today in order to continue to close the gap.

“While this new conference creates a lot of excitement and new engagement for our fans and community, we have to continue to prepare one day at a time … with laser focus on improving! This will be a very exciting transition and we look forward to this season and many more to come!”

Marshall will open Charles Huff’s second season at home against Norfolk State on September 3. Road games will follow at Notre Dame and Bowling Green over the next two Saturdays. Marshall’s first Sun Belt game will be at Troy on September 24.

Gardner-Webb was added to the schedule on October 1 to fill the slot previously held by Appalachian State. The Herd will host their new league rival on November 12. Marshall’s first Sun Belt home game will be a Wednesday night contest on October 12 against Louisiana.

Marshall has been drawn into the Sun Belt East Division and they will be joined by Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, James Madison and Old Dominion.
