WVU selected to Women’s NIT, will not compete in tournament

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The WVU women’s basketball team was selected to the 64-team Women’s National Invitational Tournament Sunday evening and was awaiting Monday’s official bracket release to learn their opponent and draw.

The WNIT released their official bracket Monday afternoon and West Virginia was not included in it. Shortly after, WVU announced that the Mountaineers will not participate in the tournament.

“While we appreciate the invitation for our women’s basketball team to participate in the 2022 WNIT, we have made the difficult decision to decline the invite this year,” WVU Director of Athletics Shane Lyons said. “Team injuries, along with student-athletes set to enter the transfer portal, have limited our roster availability, and we would not be able to provide a competitive or positive experience for our student-athletes.”

Leading scorer KK Deans was lost for the season in late-January with a knee injury. Jasmine Carson left the program midseason. Three freshmen have been held out of games this season with the plan to redshirt.

West Virginia closes the season with a record of 15-15. The Mountaineers finished seventh in the Big 12 Conference.
