Investigation underway into Tygart River fuel dump

ELKINS, W.Va. — An investigation is underway after someone allegedly dumped diesel fuel into the Tygart River.

According to Elkins officials, someone dumped a small amount of fuel into the river near Fifteenth Street. Elkins Water operators on Friday noted an oily sheen in the river.

Officials believe someone may have dumped the fuel into a nearby storm drain. None of the fuel reached the Elkins treatment or water systems.

Authorities said residents can dispose of most petroleum products at most auto parts stores.
