Gas prices at record levels nationwide

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The U.S. national average price of gasoline is at the higher level ever recorded on Tuesday, according to Gas Buddy.

Patrick De Haan, Head of Petroleum analysis GasBuddy reported that the price is now $4.351 per gallon, beating out the previous high of $4.350/gal on March 10.

According to AAA, the average price of gasoline in West Virginia is $4.198, as of Tuesday.

Appearing on Tuesday’s MetroNews ‘Talkline,’ De Haan said.

The price of diesel per gallon in West Virginia is $5.57, De Haan said. He added the impact will be seen at the store, as tractor trailers use diesel to transport items across the country. He said airfare has risen too because of the price of jet fuel.

“Grocery store, hardware store, anywhere you go, any the retail outlet, those goods are coming via semi-truck so those prices are going to sting,” De Haan said.

According to AAA, the average price of gasoline per gallon in West Virginia one week ago was $3.989, more than 20 cents less than Tuesday. One year ago from Tuesday, the average price of gasoline per gallon in the Mountain State was $2.873.

De Haan said do not expect prices to be at that low of a level for a long time.

“I don’t think West Virginia will climb to $5 average, that’s another 80 cents. But it’s not going to get much better either. there may be days where prices do go down a little bit. Keep in mind as long as Russia is active in Ukraine, the West is going to continue to cut Russia oil off. Until that changes, we’re probably stuck with elevated prices,” De Haan said.

The European Union has proposed a ban on imports of Russian crude oil within six months and on refined oil products from Russia by the end of the year. DeHaan said the move has been anticipated.

President Joe Biden’s administration unveiled a plan Tuesday to attempt to control energy prices.
