Winfield boys hold off Point Pleasant to win the Class AA track title

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — In a competition that wasn’t decided until the final lap of the final race, Winfield [117 points] edged Point Pleasant [111 points] to win the WVSSAC Class AA State Track and Field Championship at University of Charleston Stadium.

The Generals earned three victories on the second and final day of competition. Matthew Sheneberg claimed wins in the 1,600 meter and the 800 meter runs. He would collect individual high points honors in the meet. Winfield also won the 4×800 meter relay by six seconds.

Winfield led Point by four points heading into the final event, the 4×400 meter. The Generals finished second while Point finished third, giving Winfield a six-point victory.

“We stepped up today,” said Winfield head coach Shawn Anderson. “We had people score in places that we weren’t supposed to score in. They gritted and clawed and scrapped their way and found a way to come out on top. I can’t say enough about them.”

Point Pleasant narrowly missed out on defending their team title. However, they did collect four event victories on Thursday. Ian Wood won the 300 meter hurdles and the 110 meter hurdles. Preston Taylor crossed first in the 100 meters and their shuttle hurdle relay also claimed victory.

The Bluefield Beavers swept the sprint relays by winning the 4×100 and 4×200 meter runs. And senior Jacorian Green capped a stellar high school career by winning the 200 meters.

Other event winners on the final day of Class AA competition included Keyser’s Gabriel Ryan, who had the best throw in a competitive shot put event. North Marion’s Tristin Glasscock took first in the high jump with a leap of 6-foot-2. And the Berkeley Springs Indians won the final event, taking first in the 4×400 meter relay.
