Bridgeport native completes English Channel swim

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Former Bridgeport resident and competitive swimmer Laura Goodwin completed her lifelong goal of swimming the English Channel and she did it in under 11 hours.

The 44-year old swimmer completed 21 mile arm of the Atlantic Ocean between England and France in 10 hours and 44 minutes.

The span of ocean is known for cold, choppy waters, powerful tides and plenty of jelly fish.

Goodwin only stopped for chocolate milk breaks while treading water. She did suffer four or five jelly fish stings, one to the face and another on her shoulder.

As a child, Goodwin was a member of the Bridgeport Summer League Team and has always talked about making the historic distance swim.

Goodwin trained for the swim for three years. She did a mix of pool, lake and open ocean training leading up to the event.

Goodwin is now a resident of Cary, North Carolina.
