MUB studying infrastructure improvements for Westridge, Chaplin Hill

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — As Morgantown’s Westridge and Chaplin Hill areas continue to grow, the Morgantown Utility Board is considering a $13 million package directed at infrastructure improvements benefiting these neighborhoods.

The growth has been highlighted by recent announcements regarding upcoming tenants; medical logistics company Owens and Minor announced plans in June for a 350,000-square-foot distribution center in the Westridge development area. Owens and Minor plans to hire more than 100 people to operate the facility.

“The growth in that part of our system has been tremendous, and it’s been fast,” Morgantown Utility Board general manager Mike McNulty told MetroNews affiliate WAJR-AM. “It comes to that point that you are going to need those upgrades.”

The board has sought funds for the improvements from the federal government through an earmark request. Members are also considering contacting the West Virginia Development Authority about the effort.

“We want to work with developers, and we want to help find funding and make that cost as low as possible,” McNulty added.

The Morgantown Utility Board must follow certain standards to prevent residential ratepayers from dealing with the costs of upgrades. According to McNulty, once the board and the Monongalia County Commission secure funding, the bodies will study possible designs.
