Scruggs becomes last addition to Best Virginia’s roster

Four days before the start of The Basketball Tournament’s West Virginia Regional, Best Virginia has added an 11th and final player to its roster.

Tamon Scruggs, a 6-foot-4 native of South Charleston who went on to play five seasons at WVU Tech, is the latest addition to Best Virginia.

The addition of Scruggs to Best Virginia will allow him to play for his former coach James Long, who recently stepped down as head coach at WVU Tech after three seasons.

“Tamon is one of the best scorers I have been around,” Long said. “He was one of the best players in the country for us at WVU Tech. He is going to help us prepare and will be ready to contribute if his number is called.”

Scruggs becomes the second addition to Best Virginia this week following Monday’s announcement that former WVU guard Teyvon Myers was playing on the team for a second straight summer.

In his final season with the Golden Bears, Scruggs averaged 18.3 points on nearly 49 percent field goal shooting. He also made 54-of-58 free throws to finish better than 93 percent from the foul line.

Scruggs was the leading scorer at WVU Tech each of the last two seasons and averaged 15.8 points in the 2020-21 campaign.

Scruggs was the Golden Bears’ second-leading scorer with an average of 13.5 points and shot better than 53 percent in Long’s first season at WVU Tech.

Best Virginia begins play in TBT at 7 p.m. Sunday against Virginia Dream as the No. 1 seed in the West Virginia Regional. The contest at Charleston Coliseum will immediately follow a first-round matchup between the Marshall alumni-based team Herd That and Founding Fathers.
