WINFIELD, W.Va. — Three Winfield backs found the end zone and the Generals’ defense stifled Logan’s high-powered passing attack to post a 29-7 win in an important Cardinal Conference contest. Both teams are now 4-1.
Bray Boggs rushed for a pair of touchdowns and 124 yards while quarterback Brycen Brown added 114 more yards on the ground for the Generals.
“I thought our offensive line played well and they are getting better every week. I am really proud of our backs and we didn’t have any turnovers tonight. That’s huge,” said Winfield head coach Eddie Smolder.
After a scoreless first quarter, Boggs scored his touchdowns in the second quarter (10 and 9 yards) to give the Generals a 14-0 halftime lead.
Caden Beam extended the Winfield lead to three scores with a three-yard touchdown tote in the third quarter.
Logan found the end zone with ten minutes left to play when Jaxon Cogar scored on a two-yard run. However, Winfield immediately answered with a 44-yard game-clinching touchdown run from K’Juan Pearson.
Boggs and Pearson reeled in second half interceptions for the Generals.
“They have four really good receivers and their quarterback can throw it a mile. I thought our defensive line played really hard and got after it. They got enough pressure at times when they needed to for us to have a chance to win.
“Defense is our number one priority in our program and it is number one in our plan to win. We put most of our time into that.”
After dropping their season opener to Class AAA No. 3 Hurricane, Smolder’s club has won four consecutive games.
“They’re getting better each week because they are great kids, have great attitudes and come from great families. They believe in what they do and in each other. They love this school and community and it is showing on Friday nights.”
