Mountaineers battle No. 2 Kentucky to 3-3 draw

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Although West Virginia rallied after falling behind by two goals to lead No. 2 Kentucky late in Saturday’s match at Dick Desk Soccer Stadium, the Wildcats erased their only deficit in 23 seconds and the two teams settled for a 3-3 tie in a Sun Belt Conference showdown.

Before the affair was 12 minutes old, UK (8-0-4, 3-0-2) held a 2-0 lead on goals from Luis Grassow and Casper Grening.

Grassow’s goal was assisted by Andrew Erickson and Nick Gutmann, while Grening’s score was unassisted.

At the 23:28 mark, West Virginia (4-6-3, 1-1-3) cut its deficit in half courtesy of Adam Burchell’s goal off an assist from Yutaro Tsukada.

Dyon Dromers then accounted for consecutive goals in the second half, the first of which was unassisted at the 60:05 mark to tie it at 2, before Ryan Crooks assisted Dromers’ second goal to give the Mountaineers a 3-2 lead at the 77:26 mark.

Twenty-three seconds later, Grening accounted for his second goal, with Martin Soereide earning the assist on the tying score.

WVU goalkeeper Marc Bonnaire and Kentucky keeper Casper Mols were credited with three saves apiece.

The Mountaineers extended their unbeaten streak to four consecutive matches and the Wildcats remained unbeaten this season before a crowd of 2,096.

West Virginia has three regular-season matches remaining starting Wednesday at James Madison.
