Cabell sheriff says deputy’s cruiser struck and killed young girl

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Cabell County Sheriff Chuck Zerkle said one of his deputies accidentally struck a young girl with his cruiser Friday night in East Huntington, claiming the girl’s life.

“The State Police are investigating the tragic accident last night that involved a sheriff’s deputy and the death of a minor,” Zerkle said in a statement he forwarded to MetroNews. “The deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all involved.”

The deadly collision occurred at around 10:30 p.m. not far from the 5th Avenue and 31st Street intersection.

The girl’s name hasn’t been released by police. A community group is planning a candlelight vigil for Sunday evening.
