Multiple units respond to Blacksville rubber fire

UPDATE 5 p.m. Monday 3/20  Fire scene was cleared at around 5 p.m. Monday and there was no evidence of contamination.

GREENE COUNTY, Pa. – Multiple units from West Virginia and Pennsylvania are battling a fire at Chissy’s Auto Wreckers in Blacksville.

Greene County Emergency Management Authority and 911 director Richie Policz said the business disposes of pond and pool liners that caught fire around 11 a.m. Monday.

“They have about 400,000 pounds of pool or pond liner that has caught fire,” Policz said. “At this time it looks like there is no visible fire, just a lot of smoldering, and they are using heavy equipment to break it up and spray it down.”

Policz said multiple units quickly brought the fire under control, but now the main concern is runoff from the site of the fire.

“The guys are working hard and making a good stop on the fire,” Policz said. “But, overall, it’s going to be long-term with the runoff.”

The HAZMAT Team from Monongalia County was on the scene earlier during the response, along with fire departments from Mount Morris, Wayne Township, Fairview, Cassville, Blacksville, Grant Town, and Granville.

“We have the Fayette County, Pennsylvania, Hazmat Team coming in to do some work on the creeks to try to stop more runoff,” Policz said.

There are no road restrictions, but Policz reported a group of onlookers along the Mason-Dixon Highway just beyond the Clay Battelle High School.

“There are some hydrants that are being used by tankers, so there are a few trucks up there on Mason Dixon Highway, but for the most part the scene is off the roadway,” Policz said. “I don’t see any restrictions, just use caution in the area.”

No injuries have been reported, and there is no danger in the immediate area, according to Policz.

According to Policz, the scene was cleared around 5 p.m. and there was no evidence of contamination.

“The Department of Environmental Protection found nothing but sediment, there is no fish kill or sheen on the water,” Policz said. ” They’ve cleared the scene and did not require us to put a boom in the water.”
