Herbert Hoover starts fast, holds off Independence 4-2 to reach winners bracket final

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va.Highlights from Herbert Hoover’s 4-2 win over Independence in Game 2 of the Class AA state tournament.

 

A two-run, first-inning home run from Marshall University signee Sydney Bright gave Herbert Hoover a lead they would not relinquish as the Huskies (22-8) advanced to the winners bracket final of the Class AA state tournament with a 4-2 win over Independence (24-10).

HHHS starting pitcher Laila Varney allowed two runs in five innings before giving way to Hannah Shamblin for the final two frames. Varney struck out nine batters and allowed four hits.

Brooklyn Huffman had two hits and two runs batted in for the Huskies, who are seeking their sixth consecutive state tournament title.

Kendall Martin and Kassidy Bradbury had run-scoring hits for the Patriots.

The Huskies will face Winfield in the winners bracket final while the Patriots will meet Oak Glen in an elimination game at 4:45.
