Herbert Hoover returns to Class AA championship round with 14-5 win over Oak Glen

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Herbert Hoover finds themselves in a familiar position on Day 2 of the Class AA state softball tournament. The 5-time defending state champions have advanced to the championship round where Cardinal Conference rival Winfield awaits them Thursday afternoon.

The Huskies (23-9) defeated Oak Glen, 14-5 in six innings in an elimination game. HHHS used a 16-hit attack and they put the game out of reach with a 7-run sixth inning.

Each Herbert Hoover player in the starting lineup had at least one base hit. Marshall University signee Sydney Bright went 4 for 5 with three doubles and four runs batted in. Kirstin Wehrle had three hits and she drove in three runs. Hannah Shamblin added a three-run double in the sixth inning.

Herbert Hoover must defeat Winfield twice to defend their state championship. Winfield defeated the Huskies, 1-0 in Wednesday’s winners bracket final.

Oak Glen (26-11) finished in third place for the second consecutive season. Sarah Brown went 4 for 4 at the plate for the Golden Bears with two runs batted in.
