Poll: corrected results show higher percentage support for Morrisey for governor

A higher percentage of MetroNews West Virginia Poll respondents support Attorney General Patrick Morrisey than previously reported.

The correct support for Morrisey in the poll among Republicans is 27 percent.

The MetroNews West Virginia Poll had previously reported 23 percent support for Morrisey.

“We discovered a programming error late yesterday that was missed during our team’s quality control process last week, which I am ultimately responsible for,” stated pollster Rex Repass, president of Research America, which conducts the West Virginia Poll.

“The error impacted the results of the poll question about voter support for the Republican candidates for Governor. No other question was affected, and we have provided the corrected results to MetroNews.”

The highest reported support among candidates for governor, according to the West Virginia Poll, was Moore Capito, the House Judiciary chairman and son of U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, with 32 percent. That percentage of support did not change in the reassessed poll data.

Nine percent favor Chris Miller, an automobile dealer who is the son of Congresswoman Carol Miller.

Six percent favor Mac Warner, a military veteran who has served as Secretary of State since 2017. The previously reported number for Warner was 7 percent.

Twenty-six percent of poll respondents said they are still undecided. That number was previously reported as 29 percent.

Patrick Morrisey

Morrisey’s campaign responded to the correction today by slamming MetroNews and the poll, the second time the campaign has done so in the past week.

“As we have said from the beginning, this is a fake poll. Errors of this magnitude are why West Virginians continue to lose trust in the media. This is a total disserve to West Virginia voters who won’t be deceived, misled and taken advantage of by establishment institutions,” stated Jai Chabria, strategist for the Morrisey campaign.

“Make no mistake about it, Patrick Morrisey is the conservative in this race and will be next governor of West Virginia.”

The MetroNews West Virginia Poll included 402 interviews with registered voters across all 55 counties from August 16 to 26. The confidence level is +/- 4.9 percentage points.

The Morrisey campaign questioned the poll’s findings in the governor’s race right when results were first released Friday morning during the annual business summit at the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce, “slamming the fake news poll put out this morning by MetroNews.”“Any poll which shows President Trump at a 49 percent approval rating in West Virginia is laughable on its face.  The same poll also shows Manchin is more popular than President Trump in West Virginia.

“How many people believe that? Patrick Morrisey stands with Donald Trump and looks forward to winning this primary alongside him next May,” stated Chabria, the senior strategist for the Morrisey Campaign, in that earlier response.
