West Virginia opens super regional series Friday at UNC

West Virginia’s first appearance in a super regional will begin Friday night.

The NCAA has announced the schedule for all eight super regionals, with the Mountaineers beginning play at 6 p.m. Friday at No. 4 North Carolina.

Game 2 in the best-of-three series is slated for 8 p.m. Saturday, and if necessary, Game 3 will be played at 3 p.m. Sunday. All three games will be televised on ESPN2.

The Tar Heels are the No. 4 overall seed and secured their super regional spot with a 4-3 win in 10 innings Monday night against LSU.

UNC improved to 35-3 at home this season with Monday’s result, scoring once in the ninth to force extra innings, then again in the 10th to go in front, which it made hold up.

Three of the other seven super regional series start Friday — Evansville at No. 1 Tennessee; Connecticut at No. 8 Florida State; and Kansas State at No. 12 Virginia.

The other four super regional series will begin Saturday. They feature No. 15 Oregon State at No. 2 Kentucky; No. 10 North Carolina State at No. 7 Georgia; Florida at No. 6 Clemson; and Oregon at No. 3 Texas A&M.
