SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state’s two-year career and technical colleges are raising tuition and fees for next school year.
The West Virginia Council for Community and Technical College Education reviewed the increases during the council’s meeting held in South Charleston Thursday.
The boards of governors at eight two-year colleges along with WVU Parkersburg, which offers both two and four-year degrees, approved tuition increases in recent weeks.
The average increase for in-state tuition per semester at the schools is $197 or 4.3%. The highest increases are at just more than 9%, or nearly $400 a semester, for both Blue Ridge and Eastern WV community and technical colleges.
New River Community and Technical College is actually decreasing tuition next fall for its in-state students by $1.
The approved increases are projected to generate a total of $1.2 million more in revenue for the colleges next year.
Many career and technical college students in the state take advantage of the West Virginia Invests Grant program which pays the final dollars of their tuition bills after their other financial aid.
The state Higher Education Policy Commission, which oversees the state’s four-year colleges and universities, is scheduled to meet Friday and take up student financial aid issues.
