UPDATE: I-79 reopens at Goshen Road after emergency repaving

UPDATE 2 a.m. Friday — Contractors finished an emergency repaving and the southbound lanes were reopened.

GOSHEN ROAD, W.Va. — Crews continue their work to reopen I-79 southbound in Monongalia County and estimated Thursday afternoon it would be another 24-hours before the lanes would reopen.

A 500-foot section of the interstate near the Goshen Road exit will have to be repaved.

State DOH District 4 Director Earl Gaskins said the corrosive material compromised the pavement.

“The tractor-trailer lost some corrosive material on the interstate,” Gaskins said. “The material has affected the road surface, and we have private contractors onsite, and we are rebuilding that section of roadway.”

Traffic is being detoured at the Goshen Road exit and onto Route 73 south to the East Fairmont/Prickett’s Fort exit.

The driver of the tractor-trailer lost control of the rig Wednesday afternoon. It rolled and spilled 4,900 pounds of acid.

“We’re going to have to mill both lanes up and resurface those areas, and we will have this done in 24-hours,” Gaskins said. “We’re making sure to have this road opened back up for the game this weekend.”

WVU plays Kansas in Morgantown on Saturday. Kickoff is set for noon.

First responders and the DOH have been on scene for most of the night and day. The DOH is now in charge of the scene.

“We apologize for any inconvenience,” Gaskins said. “We are working as hard as we can; we’ve got private contractors involved; we’ve got state forces involved to get this done in a timely manner.”
