MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Although the Mountaineers needed to wait until the final section of brackets on the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament Selection Show, West Virginia has received an at-large bid into the field of 64. WVU will face Kentucky (11-4-4) in the opening round of the tournament Friday.
West Virginia will make their 23rd NCAA Tournament appearance and they are back in the field after a one-year absence.
WVU (12-5-2) checked in at No. 30 in the final NCAA RPI listing. The Mountaineers finished third in the Big 12 Conference regular season with an 8-2-1 record. They were eliminated by eventual tournament champion Kansas in the Big 12 quarterfinals.
32 seeded teams will host opening-round matchups. Second and third-round matches will be played on campus sites the following weekend.
Kentucky finished 24th in the NCAA RPI and they went 3-3-4 in Southeastern Conference play.
