West Virginia leaders respond to death of former President Jimmy Carter

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Several West Virginia leaders responded to Sunday’s death of former President Jimmy Carter.

Carter died at home in Plains, Ga. at the age of 100, the oldest living former president.

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin posted on X:

“President Jimmy Carter was our 39th President, but he will forever be best remembered for his gentle soul and his dedication to humanitarian efforts. He showed us how to care for one another and make the world a better place.”

U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito also offered condolences.

“Charlie and I are thinking of the family and friends of former President Jimmy Carter during this time. We respected his devotion to public service and love of his country. His lifetime of service is an example for all of us to follow.”

May he rest in peace with his beloved Rosalynn.

Gov. Jim Justice also posted on X.

“President Jimmy Carter faithfully served his country with kindness and compassion. He will be missed. Cathy and I send our prayers and condolences to the Carter family and ask all to join us. I’ll be lowering flags to half-staff in his honor until he’s laid to rest.”

Rep. Carol Miller said “President Jimmy Carter was a great man of faith and a public servant who was devoted to the United States. Matt and I send our condolences and prayers to the Carter family.”

A post on X from state Attorney General, Governor-elect Patrick Morrisey praised Carter’s service.

“Jimmy Carter leaves a legacy as a humanitarian and man of deep faith. From Habitat for Humanity to his teaching of Sunday school, he dedicated his life to serving others. Our prayers are with the Carter family.”
