Southern counties under winter storm warning with latest storm

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The National Weather Service has placed several southern and southeastern counties in West Virginia under a Winter Storm Warning in connection with the next snow storm that will hit the state Friday evening.

It’s the second storm in the past week.

The warning includes Logan, Mingo, Boone, Wyoming, McDowell, Mercer, Summers and parts of Raleigh, Fayette, Greenbrier and Nicholas counties.

Three to seven inches of snow are possible in the area.

Most of the rest of the state is under a Winter Weather Advisory with one to three inches of snow possible.

The warning and advisory stretch into Saturday evening.

MetroNews Accuweather Meteorologist Jeff Nordeen said current models show snow showers arriving in the southern part of the state later and by 9 or 10 p.m. snow showers are expected to cover the state and continue through Saturday afternoon.

“From then all the way into the middle to late afternoon tomorrow, we’re looking for snow to continue with one to three inches in the northern part of the state,” Nordeen said.

Motorists are advised to plan extra time for travel, or if you can, complete travel before the storm arrives.

“Any untreated roads are going to be slick, and the morning commute is going to be slower,” Nordeen said. “So, if you need to get anywhere for Saturday, just give yourself some extra time and take it slow.”

This system will bring warmer air to the region until the next potential for winter weather arrives on Monday. The next upper-level low-pressure system could start to bring more snow to the state Sunday night, but more likely in the morning hours of Monday.

“Mid to upper 20s today and tomorrow, and then we’re in the low to mid 30s Sunday and Monday,” Nordeen said. “Then on Monday a system is coming through bringing lighter snowfall.”

After a return of bitter cold air Monday night, Thursday temperatures start to increase, and we could see the first 40-degree day in 2025 next weekend.

“Thursday into Friday back to the mid to upper 20s, even the low 30s, and we have the potential for a 40-degree day next weekend,” Nordeen said.
