CHARLESTON, W.Va. — On a day when temperatures were below zero to start the day Wednesday only one county across the state of West Virginia’s 55 made the call to have in-person classes.
According to the West Virginia Department of Education website, Kanawha County students had classes on a two-hour delay.
Every other county made the call to cancel school altogether or have a non-traditional school day.
Temperatures dropped below zero overnight Tuesday and well into the afternoon Wednesday didn’t get out of the teens. The dangerous cold created concerns for children waiting for the school bus in the early morning hours even with the delayed start.
Wednesday the school addressed the concerns in a post on Facebook saying the decision was made to support all students on “challenging days like this.”
The post also said in part:
“For many students, school is more than a place of learning—it’s a vital source of warmth and nourishment. Our schools provide meals that some children might not otherwise have access to and are among the warmest and safest environments for students to spend their day.
That said, we recognize that everyone’s circumstances are different, and we prioritize your family’s safety above all. If your child is unable to safely attend school today due to the weather, we understand. Please reach out to your child’s teacher or school to coordinate any makeup work or assignments. If your student is absent today due to their bus not running, it is an excused absence.”
