Human remains found in 2021 identified as Cassie Sheetz

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The human remains recovered by West Virginia State Police have been confirmed as 24-year-old Cassie Sheetz.

Sheetz, of Upper Tract, was reported missing in March 2021. She was last seen near Spruce Knob in Pendleton County.

In December, hunters found human remains in a remote part of the Monongahela National Forest in Pendleton County, and personal items within the area led police to believe the remains were those of Sheetz.

Recent DNA testing has now confirmed the skeletal remains found in late 2021 were the remains of Sheetz. The DNA testing was conducted through samples obtained from Sheetz’s family.

The investigation into Sheetz’s death is still ongoing. Those with information are asked to call the Franklin Detachment at 304-358-2200.
