WVU BOG chooses finalists in presidential search

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia University Board of Governors accepted a slate of finalists to serve as the next president Friday.

Richard Pill

The announcement came just before 5 p.m. after the BOG went into executive session just a few minutes after they gaveled in at 1 p.m.

BOG Chair Richard Pill said a round of preliminary interviews was conducted and made a motion to move an unknown number of finalists to the next step of the process.

“At this time I make a motion to approve the slate of finalists as discussed during the executive session today,” Pill said. ” These designated will be moved and invited to participate in the next phase of the WVU presidential search.”

The search began late last summer after current WVU President Gordon Gee announced hs retirement this coming summer.

Presidential Search Committee Chair Patrice Harris previously said after initial interviews the field would be reduced to the top three to five candidates. Additional in-person interviews will be conducted with the finalists, and the next president of WVU will be announced in the spring of 2025.

The BOG has also decided to keep confidential the names of those selected in the initial round.

Harris released the following update Friday night:

Dear West Virginia University Community,

I’m excited to share a brief update on the search for our next University President. Today, the Board of Governors held a special meeting to review a slate of top candidates to interview in person.

The finalists come from across the country and have extensive leadership experience.

It’s been a privilege to chair the search committee and see widespread interest in serving as the 27th President of WVU from such a strong pool of candidates.

We are well on our way to finding our next President who can lead with the right balance of strength and humility to manifest a positive, compelling vision for our University’s and our state’s future.

The search process remains on schedule. The Board of Governors plans to announce the next University President this spring. We look forward to welcoming that person to join our Mountaineer family soon.

As we near the end of this process, I extend a warm note of appreciation to all the faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members who participated in the Presidential Search process to date.
