Charleston attorney Anne Charnock named to open Senate seat

Charleston attorney Anne Charnock has been appointed to fill a state Senate seat based in Kanawha County.

Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced the appointment of Charnock to fill a vacancy in Senate District 17 that resulted after previous officeholder Eric Nelson took on a new role as state Secretary of Revenue.

“Anne is a lifelong Republican and has been a dedicated public servant in Kanawha County,” Morrisey said in the announcement. “As a former judge and an accomplished attorney, she will be a great advocate for her constituents.”

Charnock served for more than a decade as municipal judge in Charleston. She is a member of the Republican National Lawyers Association and served as a hearing examiner for multiple state and local agencies, a child advocate attorney, assistant counsel for the state Republican Party, and as the owner of Charnock & Charnock in Charleston.

This is the second Senate seat in the Kanawha Valley that the governor has filled the past couple of weeks.

Last week, the governor announced Kevan Bartlett, a former delegate and pastor, would fill a seat from the 8th Senate district that opened after Mark Hunt was elected state auditor.

Bartlett, a Sissonville native, was previously appointed to serve in the West Virginia House of Delegates in 2019. He served in the 39th district. Bartlett is the pastor of Maranatha Baptist Church in Charleston.
