National Weather Service keeps flood warning in effect until 6:30 p.m. Thursday for most of the Mountain State

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Damage assessments will begin following Thursday’s flash flooding along the Interstate 64 corridor between Charleston and Huntington.

Cabell County Office of Emergency Services Director Gordan Merry said parts of Enslow Park and Ritter Park in Huntington took on water.

“The Enslow Park area, where most of the houses are and right now we have no injuries or anything, no one was hurt. ” said Merry.

A few residents had to be rescued from their homes, Merry said.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Simone Lewis said warm air and cold air collided causing the storm system.

“We have had a storm system approach us from the south and that is what has brought all this warm air and heavy rain with it,” Lewis said.

The National Weather Service extended a flood warning for the area until 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Rain had moved out of the area by late morning.

Lewis said parts of southeastern Ohio along with the northern mountains and Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia were impacted by freezing rain.

“You’re looking at two to three tenths of an inch of ice as well as a coating of sleet is possible,” Lewis said.
