Saturday night storm rips through Monongalia County leaving thousands without power

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — It’s going to take most of Easter Sunday to restore power to thousands of residents in north central West Virginia after a heavy storm blew through the area Saturday night.

Mon Power said it had more than 45,000 customers without service in West Virginia as of 5 a.m. Sunday.

Most of the outages are in Monongalia County where the storm did the most damage.

Mon Power said more than 25,000 of its customers in Monongalia County were without service Sunday morning. That represents 44 percent of the utility’s total number of customers in the county.

The storm knocked down trees and power lines. Fire department crews were dispatched to clear roadway of fallen trees.

Mon Power also reported outages of more than 2,000 customers in Marion, Preston, Morgan, Webster and Wood counties.
