Roundup: Spring Mills blanks Jefferson; South Charleston wins on final play

A closer look at some notable results from Week 1 across West Virginia high school football:

Class AAAA

— Martinsburg, Huntington fall: The top two teams in the MetroNews Power Rankings were both shutout to start the season against out-of-state competition. The Bulldogs suffered a 28-0 loss to Camden (N.J.), while the Highlanders were defeated 49-0 by Oakland (Tenn.). Martinsburg and Huntington square off in Week 2, meaning an 0-2 start is assured for the loser.

— SPRING MILLS 14, Jefferson 0: Blake Sanders and Tavon Jones had rushing touchdowns for the No. 3 Cardinals, which recorded a shutout victory over the Cougars for the second straight season.

— UNIVERSITY 40, Musselman 21: Brody Kehler rushed for 101 yards and four touchdowns and returned an interception for a score, while the Hawks forced six turnovers in a season-opening win.

— WOODROW WILSON 41, Washington 20: Gage Price passed for 193 yards with three touchdowns and the Flying Eagles scored three fourth-quarter TDs to pull away from the Patriots.

 

Class AAA

— BRIDGEPORT 62, Buckhannon-Upshur 14: Gabe Martin rushed for 194 yards and four touchdowns and the Tribe amassed 457 yards on the ground to roll by the Buccaneers.

— PRINCETON 28, Capital 7: Chance Barker threw for 210 yards and Brad Mosser had a rushing and receiving touchdown to help the Tigers start head coach Nathan Tanner’s tenure on a positive note.

— SOUTH CHARLESTON 27, Ripley 23: The Black Eagles’ Amari Valentine caught a 37-yard Hail Mary pass off a deflection on the final play to lift SCHS to a victory in Donnie Mays’ return to the sideline.

It was South Charleston’s first win since 2022 and came after the Vikings had taken a lead on a field goal with 24 seconds remaining.

— HAMPSHIRE 40, Preston 20: Roscoe Dean rushed for three touchdowns and Sean King returned an interception 97 yards for a score to help the Trojans top the Knights. 

 

Class AA

— FRANKFORT 34, Moorefield 10: The defending state champion Falcons led 14-3 at halftime and rolled to victory in their opener.

— BLUEFIELD 20, Graham (Va.) 10: The Beavers snapped a four-game losing streak to the G-Men.

— WAYNE 33, Tolsia 6: The Pioneers rushed for 298 yards, including 127 from Kaiden Hayton, who added three touchdowns.

— PETERSBURG 55, Berkeley Springs 13: Payton Metheny threw five touchdown passes to help the Vikings cruise.

— POCA 34, Buffalo 6: The Dots got two receiving touchdowns as well as a punt return for a score from Jack McClanahan.

 

Class A

— WHEELING CENTRAL CATHOLIC 25, Union Local (Ohio) 19: The Maroon Knights got a 64-yard touchdown reception from Kade Koroneos and picked up a quality victory.

— ST. MARYS 13, Ravenswood 0: The Blue Devils got rushing touchdowns from Eli Cox and Eli Wilson to go with a dominant defensive showing.

— TYGARTS VALLEY 54, Valley Wetzel 13: Jacob Wamsley rushed for four touchdowns to help the Bulldogs win comfortably.
