MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Meteorologists from the National Weather Service said the Morgantown area received about four inches of snow early Tuesday morning.

MECCA 911 Executive Director Jim Smith said the snow fell on top of a thin layer of ice making travel conditions especially slick across the entire county. First responders helped 70 motorists in distress during the morning commute, according to Smith.
“We’ve had 43 accidents reported so far this morning,” Smith said. “Five of those accidents were reported with injuries.”
Schools across the region quickly extended two-hour delays to closure, and classes on the WVU Morgantown campus were delayed until noon. The conditions disrupted meal delivery for seniors and forced the cancellation of several other meetings in the area.
“There was a lot of ice mixed in with that snow, and we had more snowpack on top of that, and as cars drove on that, it made for a lot of icy roads this morning,” Smith said.
Smith urged residents to avoid non-essential travel until later today in order to give state and local workers a chance to get the roads cleared. With temperatures staying near the freezing mark, both mechanical and chemical snow removal methods are expected to be effective.
UPDATE 12/2/25 8:50 a.m.
Due to weather conditions, West Virginia University is now scheduled to resume full on-campus operations at noon Tuesday (Dec. 2). This is a two-hour extension of a previously announced delay.

“Give them a chance to get out there and get it plowed down and treated,” Smith said. “Once the roads are plowed and treated, they’re clear enough, and it looks like the snow has moved past us now.”
The forecast for the Morgantown area Tuesday night is clouds with a low temperature of 24, and that is more cause for concern, according to Smith. Any snow and ice that freezes overnight could possibly become black ice during the Wednesday morning commute.
“When the sun goes down and the temperatures start dropping late tonight and early tomorrow morning, you could still see a little ice out there, so make sure you use caution tomorrow morning,” Smith said.
