GRANVILLE, W.Va. — West Virginia and Cal Poly clash in Game 2 of the Super Regional series from a sold-out Kendrick Family Ballpark.
First pitch is set for 12:06 p.m and the matchup can be seen on ESPN2. The Mountaineers will serve as the away team today.
The Mustangs (39-23) look to bounce back from Friday’s 12-2 loss to the Mountaineers.
WVU (44-15) needs a win to qualify for the College World Series for the first time and set a new single season program record for victories.
Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and Mountaineer ace Maxx Yehl gets the start on the mound. He made two starts with far different results in last week’s Morgantown Regional. Last Saturday, Yehl failed to make it out of the first inning against Kentucky. He came back Monday to throw five innings of one-run ball against the Wildcats on Monday, playing an integral role in a 6-5 10-inning win.
Cal Poly turns to right-hander Carson Turnquist, who has a 9-2 record with a 3.35 earned-run average over 75.1 innings.
5:09 p.m. — FINAL: West Virginia 17, Cal Poly 1. Ben McDougal works a scoreless ninth and the Mountaineers are heading to the College World Series for the first time.
4:55 p.m. — END 8: West Virginia 17, Cal Poly 1. The Mountaineers are three outs away from their first appearance in the College World Series.
4:50 p.m. — Zahir Barjam comes within feet of a solo home run upon the restart, but instead strikes out to end the top of the eighth. Ian Korn is on for David Hagen as WVU’s third pitcher today.
4:15 p.m. — Cal Poly has taken the field for warmups and the contest is slated to resume at 4:45.
3:08 p.m. — We have entered a lightning delay with two outs in the top of the eighth.
3:00 p.m. — END 7: West Virginia 17, Cal Poly 1. Graveline scored the lone run in the seventh to make it six straight innings with at least one run for WVU.
2:41 p.m. — END 6: West Virginia 16, Cal Poly 1. Hagen works around Dylan Kordic’s leadoff walk and the Mountaineers maintain a 15-run advantage.
2:33 p.m. — The Mountaineers score two more for their fifth consecutive frame with a crooked number. Guzman’s single and a Schoenfeld groundout brought in both runs. An announcement is made mid-inning that severe weather is approaching Kendrick Family Ballpark. David Hagen is on in relief of Yehl to start the home half of the sixth.
2:15 p.m. — END 5: West Virginia 14, Cal Poly 1. Yehl allows two singles, but strands both runners. He’s thrown 45 of 77 pitches for strikes.
2:07 p.m. — The Mountaineers score two in the fifth to make it 14-1. Kelly’s solo home run marked the first of three straight batters to reach to start the inning, with Graveline’s double play ball later in the inning bringing home the team’s 14th run.
1:57 p.m. — END 4: West Virginia 12, Cal Poly 1. Yehl works around a leadoff walk and induces a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play. He’s faced the minimum nine batters over the last three innings and has not allowed a hit since the first inning.
1:50 p.m. — Lumsden’s second home run — this one a two-run shot — makes it 12-1. WVU has six home runs in 12 innings this series and they’ve accounted for 15 of the team’s 24 runs. One of the six is a solo homer.

1:34 p.m. — END 3: West Virginia 10, Cal Poly 1. Yehl has retired seven straight and is at 50 pitches with 30 strikes.
1:28 p.m. — The Mountaineers add three more in the third, scoring two on Guzman’s first home run this season and another on Schoenfeld’s sharp single to right that ended with Kelly avoiding a tag at the plate for his team’s 10th run. Across 11 innings of at bats in the Super Regional series, West Virginia has there for more runs in five.

1:13 p.m. — END 2: West Virginia 7, Cal Poly 1. Yehl retires the bottom of the Mustangs’ lineup in order across 15 pitches in the second. He’s at 39 pitches with 24 strikes and a first-pitch strike to six of nine batters.
1:06 p.m. — West Virginia adds two more runs to make it a seven spot in the second. Sean Smith drove in the sixth run of the inning on a single and Graveline brought in the seventh with a ground ball on the infield that marked the second out. During the inning, Armani Guzman notched his 38th stolen base this season to tie Victor Scott for the Mountaineers’ all-time single season record. WVU leads by six heading to the bottom of the second and Yehl will be back on the mound following a 35-minute layoff.
12:50 p.m. — WVU has scored five runs before recording an out in the second inning. A bloop ground-rule double fair by inches off the bat of Matthew Graveline changes the complexion of the game and starts a stretch of six straight Mountaineers to reach base. After Graveline stole third, Matt Ineich drew a walk, before a double steal saw Graveline score his team’s first run. Brodie Kresser then worked a walk and Ben Lumsden followed with a three-run home run. Tyrus Hall’s solo home run made it back-to-back long balls and Armani Guzman was hit by a pitch. That’s the end of the day for Turnquist, who is pulled after recording only three outs. On comes left-hander Chris Downs, who has compiled a 5.01 ERA over 26 appearances and 55.2 innings.

12:32 p.m. — END 1: Cal Poly 1, West Virginia 0. The Mustangs have their first lead of the series courtesy of a Ryan Tayman sacrifice fly that scored Nick Cantellon, who reached on a leadoff single to start. WVU looked to have a chance to retire Cantellon, who sent a ground ball to shortstop Matt Ineich, but first baseman Armani Guzman was unable to haul in a high throw on a challenging play. Yehl threw 24 pitches and 14 strikes. He’s hit five batters across 6.2 innings of NCAA Tournament play thus far. The southpaw was consistently throwing his fastball 90-91 miles per hour in the opening inning.
12:16 p.m. — WVU gets a one-out single from Gavin Kelly, but nothing more in the first. Turnquist threw 22 pitches and 15 strikes, striking out both Paul Schoenfeld and Sean Smith after Kelly’s hit.
