OMAHA, Neb. — West Virginia and Troy both try to prolong their respective seasons at least one more game in an elimination matchup at 1 p.m. (CST) inside Charles Schwab Field.
Both teams have been in this position before, with the No. 16 Mountaineers (46-16) winning three straight elimination games to claim the Morgantown Regional, while the Trojans (39-31) won four straight after dropping the opener of the Gainesville Regional and already avoided elimination Sunday with a 12-8 win over Ole Miss.
The winner of this one will face No. 5 North Carolina at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
The Trojans have hit as well as any team throughout the NCAA Tournament and lead all MCWS teams with 23 hits and a .303 batting average in Omaha. Troy has 91 runs across nine games since the start of the Gainesville Regional.
All but three Troy wins this season have come when the Trojans scored at least six runs. When Troy doesn’t score more than five runs, its record is 3-24. When the Trojans have held opponents to three or fewer runs, they’re 18-0.

4:50 p.m. — Kelly makes it 11-0 with a run-scoring single and Schoenfeld drives in the 12th run on a groundout to second. It’s 12-0 WVU headed to the bottom of the ninth and Carson Estridge is on to pitch.
4:42 p.m. — Barjam singles, Hall works a walk and Guzman connects for a two-run double to make it 10-0.
4:35 p.m. — Graveline and Ineich account for consecutive singles to start the ninth and Kresser’s sacrifice fly brings Graveline home for the eighth run. Brady Richardson is on to pitch and Zahir Barjam is on to pinch-hit for Lumsden.
4:26 p.m. — END 8: West Virginia 7, Troy 0. Bassinger strikes out the side and has five strikeouts across six batters faced.
4:20 p.m. — WVU goes down in order in the eighth. Bassinger is back out to pitch.
4:12 p.m. — END 7: West Virginia 7, Troy 0. Bassinger records two strikeouts and gets Janicki to fly out to shallow center in between, preventing Troy from scoring. A masterful job from West Virginia’s top late-inning reliever.

4:04 p.m. — McDougal’s day is done after Pyne’s single loads the bases with no outs. On comes Reese Bassinger with Cavill, the No. 3 hitter, due up, and Janicki to follow.
4:01 p.m. — Houston Markham accounts for Troy’s third hit with a leadoff double, Aaron Piasecki follows with a four-pitch walk and the Trojans are threatening against McDougal.
3:55 p.m. — Smith strikes out Guzman and WVU’s seventh run goes down as unearned.
3:51 p.m. — Dill’s day is done. Hayden Smith is on to pitch with Kresser at first and two outs.
3:48 p.m. — Ineich connects for a leadoff single, takes second on a passed ball and scores on Kresser’s one-out single. WVU ups its lead to 7-0.
3:40 p.m. — END 6: West Virginia 6, Troy 0. The Trojans load the bases without putting the ball in play, before McDougal induces a weak ground ball from Jabe Boroff that Kresser handles for the final out.
3:33 p.m. — Montesa’s day is done after he strikes out Janicki and hits Steven Meier. On comes McDougal, who will first face Nelson.
3:28 p.m. — Montesa issues a leadoff walk to Cavill and has exceeded 100 pitches. Ben McDougal is warming up for the second straight inning.
3:23 p.m. — The Mountaineers tack on another with Sean Smith’s single to score Schoenfeld, who had moved to second on a wild pitch. Montesa is back out to start the sixth with a six-run lead. The Trojans’ have 3-4-5 due up.
3:18 p.m. — Schoenfeld follows with an infield single and that’s the end of the outing for Alonso, who is replaced by right-handed freshman Matt Dill.
3:15 p.m. — West Virginia gets a critical hit it was so desperately seeking as Kelly blasts his 18th home run this season to left-center. A pivotal two-out rally began with Tyrus Hall drawing a walk and Guzman followed with one of his own. WVU leads 5-0. Kelly’s 18 home runs leave him one off tying Mark Landers and Jedd Gyorko for the school record in a season.

2:57 p.m. — END 5: West Virginia 2, Troy 0. The Trojans strand a pair when Pyne bounces out to first for the final out of the fifth. Troy is putting together better at bats against Montesa as the game progresses, but the right-hander has pitched five exceptional innings and is at 94 pitches with 55 strikes.
2:45 p.m. — WVU goes down in order for the first time today. The Mountaineers hold a 2-0 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth.
2:37 p.m. — END 4: West Virginia 2, Troy 0. Janicki’s double to the corner in right marks Troy’s first hit, but he’s stranded at third when Montesa strikes out Drew Nelson. Montesa has thrown 69 pitches and 39 strikes.

2:27 p.m. — The Mountaineers squander a prime opportunity to add to their lead when Kelly strikes out on a 3-2 check swing and Paul Schoenfeld follows with a strikeout on three pitches. Schoenfeld nearly reached on a dropped third strike, but Troy first baseman Blake Cavill narrowly maintained his foot on the first base bag for a critical out. Struggles continue for WVU with runners in scoring position and the Mountaineers are now 1-for-8 today.
2:11 p.m. — END 3: West Virginia 2, Troy 0. Montesa retires the side in order and records his fourth strikeout. He’s at 48 pitches with 28 strikes. Ellingworth’s day is done and Troy is bringing in right-handed junior Dylan Alonso to start the fourth inning.
2:05 p.m. — The Mountaineers strike first on Graveline’s double that brought in Kelly, and a wild pitch allows Graveline to score a second run with two outs in the inning. 1:48 p.m. — END 2: West Virginia 0, Troy 0. Montesa works around a two-out walk to Sean Darnell and the game remains scoreless. The right-hander has two four-pitch base-on-balls in as many innings, but threw first-pitch strikes to three of four batters in the second.
1:38 p.m. — WVU gets two baserunners, including a leadoff walk from Matt Ineich, but the struggles continue with runners in scoring position as Armani Guzman’s groundout to second base keeps it scoreless.
