Arraignment Friday in Hinton arson case

The Hinton man who allegedly burned down a house and a city block is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in circuit court on attempted murder and first-degree arson charges.

Billy Joe Gill, 25, was indicted by the Summers County Grand Jury Wednesday after last week’s fire that destroyed a house on Fifth Street in Hinton and a row of apartments, known as Brick Row on Temple Street. Thirty residents were displaced by the blazes.

The grand jury also indicted Gill on two counts of attempted murder. Summers County Prosecutor Amy Mann says the indictments are connected to two people living in the Fifth Street house. Investigators believe Gill was trying to kill those residents. He allegedly set that fire first before moving on to Brick Row.

A trial date will be set as part of Friday’s arraignment.
