Girl Scouts stepping up to help victimized Clay food pantry

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A troop of Girl Scouts saw a negative and decided they could turn it into a positive. Earlier this week the shelves of the Christian Service Center Food Pantry in Clay were cleaned out by thieves. During a break in thousands of dollars worth of food stored there was stolen.

The Christian Service Center Food Pantry in Clay was totally cleaned out in a robbery earlier this week.

A local troop of Girl Scouts decided to get involved.

“Our girls follow our mission which is to make the world a better place. They discover, connect, and take action,” said Jennifer Brown, Director of Community Engagement for the Black Diamond Council. “In this case when they found out the food pantry was in need, they immediately took action to start this food drive.”

Time is pressing on the matter however. The Christian Service Center has a major food distribution planned for a large number of needy families in Clay County next week. There was concern in the wake of the theft the distribution wouldn’t happen.

The troop’s idea was shared with the staff a the council and it has become a council wide event.

Non-perishable food items can be dropped off Thursday, Friday, and Monday at the office of the Black Diamond Girl Scout Council at 321 Virginia Street West in Charleston. You can also call 1-800-756-7616 for more information.
