MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — From shaking down Joe Wickline to claiming full dibs on Pistol Pete, Oklahoma State suddenly has turned into Lawsuit U.
The school claims Wickline owes a $593,000 buyout after leaving for a non-playcalling position at Texas. Muddying the issue is the fact that Longhorns boss Charlie Strong said Wickline collaborates on calling plays, while quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson “has the final voice.” From OSU’s perspective, that means Wickline took a lateral move and must adhere to the buyout clause. (Hey, Joe, maybe it’s worth 600 grand to claim you’re not responsible for the Texas offense.)
In cartoon news, Oklahoma State is suing New Mexico State for infringing upon their copyrighted mascot, even though both schools have celebrated Pistol Pete for decades. This can only end poorly: With an ESPN promo featuring the dueling Cowboys shooting cap guns over a cubicle occupied by Alan Dershowitz.
