MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Kyle Rose, one of West Virginia’s defensive leaders, was arrested early Sunday morning at a downtown bar after allegedly striking an officer during a fracas that ended with the football player being tased.
Rose was charged with a series of misdemeanors—public intoxication, disorderly conduct, obstructing an officer and battery on an officer—and released on $600 bond.
The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. at Bent Willey’s bar on Chestnut Street. Security informed police that Rose had been tossed out of the bar earlier but returned and shoved a bouncer upon re-entering. Police ultimately took the 6-foot-4, 294-pound Rose to the floor after he allegedly shoved an officer in the face. The senior nose guard subsequently continued resisting officers’ attempts to put him in handcuffs and had to be tased, police said.
Police said Rose acknowledged he had been drinking.
West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen told media outlets that disciplinary action would be handled internally. For the sake of comparisons, running back Elijah Wellman was held out of one game last fall after being cited for disorderly conduct in the riots that followed an upset win over Baylor.
WVU Director of Football Operations Michael Montoro added, “As with all students, Rose could face student disciplinary action.”
Since redshirting in 2011, Rose has appeared in 38 consecutive games for the Mountaineers, including 20 as a starter. Projected to be the starter at nose tackle next season, Rose has drawn praise from West Virginia coaches for his performance through the first half of spring practices.
