BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Former West Virginia quarterback Adam Bednarik, who started for the Mountaineers in 2005, is facing multiple sexual assault charges stemming from a relationship with a 15-year-old girl, according to authorities.
The 29-year-old is charged with statutory sexual assault of a victim age 11 or older, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a person under age 16, institutional sexual assault, indecent assault of a person under age 16 and five counts each of corruption of minors, according to court records.
Bednarik has been on unpaid leave by the Bethlehem Area School District after working as teacher’s aide and coach. He had been serving as a a special education teacher’s aide, girls basketball coach and assistant football coach at various high schools in the area.
Police say Bednarik began flirting with the then 15-year old student in the fall of 2013. He’s accused of sending at least one naked photo, among other photos, of himself to the girl’s cellphone between February and August 2014.
Authorities allege Bednarik had sexual contact with the girl in his vehicle in August while parked along a street in Bethlehem Township.
During the 2005 season, Bednarik led West Virginia to a 5-1 record, completing 55-of-75 passes for 532 yards and four touchdowns, before losing the starting job to Pat White.
