Several injured in school bus collision

UNION, W.Va. — A dozen children were treated and released for injuries after a frightening accident involving a Monroe County school bus Friday afternoon.

The bus, hauling students from Mountain View elementary and middle schools and James Monroe High School, was struck by a pickup truck Friday afternoon on U.S. Route 219 in the community of Pickway north of Union. The impact was so strong it knocked the bus over on its side.

Emergency crews immediately swarmed the area and began assessing passengers. Worried parents also started to arrive as word of the accident spread.

All of the students and the bus driver were treated and released at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center.

The driver and a passenger in the pickup truck were flown to a Roanoke, Va., hospital. Their condition was unknown late Friday.

State police and Monroe County deputies spent five hours at the scene investigating the accident. Reconstruction experts were pouring over details of the crash.
