Friday takeaways: Cameron rises, Martinsburg rolls, Fairmont Sr. slips

BLACKSVILLE, W.Va. — Cameron, looking for its first playoff appearance since 2003, secured a significant road win on Friday night by dominating previously unbeaten Clay-Battelle 48-19.

The ninth rated Dragons (7-0) led 24-19 at the break and then completely controlled the second half.

“It’s been beyond my wildest dreams, the start to this season,” said Cameron coach Scott Holt. “We had quick scores when we needed them, clock management when we needed it and we were rolling really good.”

Cameron running back Michael Starcher and quarterback Colby Brown were also dominant. Starcher finished with 217 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries, while Brown completed 8 of 12 passes for 183 yards and five total touchdowns (one passing, four rushing).

The Dragons will host 6-1 Van next week.

Jefferson hands Fairmont Senior first loss of the season, Martinsburg rolls

AAA No. 15 Jefferson improved to 4-3 with an impressive 35-24 win over Class AA No. 1 Fairmont Senior. The Cougars were led by quarterback Isaac Myers who rushed for 192 yards and threw for three touchdown passes.

Jefferson led 21-17 at the break and held Fairmont Senior (6-1) to -4 rushing yards in the second half.

Highlights: Bridgeport 35, North Marion 7

“They were playing a 3-4 defensively and we just wanted to run the ball,” Myers said. “We had the running game going and that’s how we were able to win. In halftime we wanted to keep the momentum going and keep the train going. The defense did a great job and set up the offense very well.”

The win sets up a matchup next week for the Cougars against No. 1 Martinsburg and quarterback Tyson Bagent. The Bulldogs on Friday beat No. 12 Hedgesville 63-0.

“Tyson (Bagent) and I played on the same midget league team,” Myers said. “So, we’ve always talked to each other and talked smack – but that’s all fun and games. I’m looking forward to it and I’m looking forward to the competitiveness.”

Huntington bounces back after loss to Cabell Midland

Huntington (6-2) responded from a Week 7 loss to Cabell Midland with a 24-13 win over Hurricane (4-3) on Friday night.

Highlanders’ running back Jadon Hayes finished with 120 rushing yards on 29 carries, putting him over the 1,000 yard mark for the season.

“A win is a win and we’re glad to be 6-2,” said Huntington coach Billy Seals. “We made a lot of personnel changes this week, we just felt like we needed to make them for us to be better (defensively). We think we got better with those changes. I thought our secondary played relatively well tonight and I thought our pressure was decent. We have a lot of work to do, but a win is a win.”

Huntington will be at South Charleston next week. The Black Eagles had to come back late Friday to beat St. Albans 39-38.

Cougars’ quarterback Corey McDonald threw for 192 yards, rushed for 98 more and accounted for six total touchdowns (three passing, three rushing).

“We have things clicking right now offensively and defensively,” said East Hardy coach Chad Williams. “I expected us to come out and play well, but I don’t know if I quite expected that. Corey (McDonald) has just been outstanding this year and has been like that week-in and week-out, averaging five touchdowns per game.

Highlights: Fayetteville 51, Midland Trail 31

“Defensively, we’re giving up less than 10 points per game,” Williams said. “We are through seven games, but it takes 14 (to win a title), so we’re only halfway there. The big thing that has helped us this year has been the addition of a bigger running game.”

Junior running back Philip Mullin totaled 162 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns on 12 carries in Friday’s win.
