WVU student’s life celebrated in hometown

TOMS RIVER, N.J. — Memorial services for a West Virginia University junior industrial engineering major begin this weekend.

Sean Guthrie, 20, was pronounced dead at Ruby Memorial Hospital Wednesday, October 19. In order for his organs to be donated, Guthrie had been on life support since a fatal fall on Sunday, October 16.

Anderson & Campbell Funeral home in Guthrie’s hometown, Toms River, N.J., will receive visitors Sunday, October 23. A funeral mass is on Monday, October 24.

The Office of Greek Life at WVU shared condolences on a memorial page for the Kappa Alpha member.

“Sean was one of the finest young men we have ever had the pleasure to know and work with in fraternity life. He was bright, intelligent, and kind. He could always be counted on to do whatever we needed to be done, and he did it with passion and enthusiasm. He will be missed for a very long time at West Virginia University,” noted the online post. “Thank you for sharing your son with us and take comfort knowing that you did an amazing job raising him to be a wonderful and compassionate young man. God bless your family and know that Sean will always be with you.”

Guthrie fell approximately 20 feet from the Kappa Alpha fraternity house roof. Investigators determined it was an accidental fall.
