Flood recovery update to be given at Tuesday meeting in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Greater Kanawha Long-Term Recovery Committee has a meeting scheduled for Tuesday night to give an update on efforts in response to the June 23 flood.

“We’re going to lay out a game plan of how people will get an updated notice every week about the homes and what needs to be done and how their volunteers can plug in,” said committee member Mike Shinn on “580 Live” heard on MetroNews affiliate 580-WCHS in Charleston.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Mountain Mission facility on Charleston’s West Side.

“We’re trying to rally all the churches, business leaders, local politicians and social groups just to say this is where we are in the flood recovery work,” Shinn said.

The biggest need right now is volunteers, Shinn said.

“The funding is there to help with the materials for homes, we just need the people to come out and help do the work,” he said.

The committee is currently working to repair 100 homes destroyed in the flood.

Groups like Mountain Mission’s HOPE Project and the American Red Cross have played a major role in getting flood survivors back in their homes. Shinn said they’ll soon begin on the final phase.

“We’re ready to put vinyl flooring in, kitchen cabinets, doors, painting and help people get into that final stage to where they can get back in their homes and start bring furniture back in,” he said.

Tuesday night’s meeting is open to the public.
