Trial begins for Salem woman charged with child abuse, strangulation

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — A 23-year-old Salem woman is facing four felony charges related to alleged child abuse of her 3-year-old child.

The trial of Shelby Lee Chipps began Monday in Harrison County Circuit Court before a 12-member jury.

Chipps is charged with one count of child abuse resulting in injury, one count of child abuse creating substantial risk of death or serious injury, one count of conspiracy and one count of strangulation. She has pleaded innocent of all charges.

Brandon Waldo Ford, 28, of Salem is also charged in the case.

The trial, which is expected to last four to five days, resumed with opening statements Tuesday morning. The trial could be pushed into next week, as the Harrison County Courthouse is closed Friday in observance of the Veterans Day holiday.
