Mardi Gras opening new adoption center for greyhounds

CROSS LANES, W.Va. — The Mardi Gras Casino in Cross Lanes will open its greyhound adoption center Saturday in an effort to give retired racing dogs a home after racing.

The casino built a new center on the property, which is capable of housing four dogs. Two employees will look after the animals.

“When a dog’s done racing and retires, we’re very diligent to find them a home to ensure that they’re taking care of as much as any other pet would be,” said Eric Althaus, Mardi Gras’ president and CEO.

The previous adoption center was located away from the resort. The new center will be open between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays as well as accept appointments.

“Anytime someone wants to come and adopt a dog, we’re going to bend over backward to be able to accommodate that,” Althaus said.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday is set for 5 p.m.
