Warner encourages voters to verify registration ahead of elections

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — On National Voter Registration Day, Secretary of State Mac Warner said his office’s focus remains on election security and encouraging high school students to register to vote.

“We’ve really emphasized the high school population and there’s several reasons for that,” Warner told the Panhandle News Network. “What I’m talking to them about is this Russian meddling and cyber security. So there’s a dual message here of protecting yourself on social media and then encouraging them to register to vote.”

In the last 32 months, Warner said over 130,000 eligible West Virginians have registered to vote. Of that number, 35,000 have been high school students.

‘West Virginia has this proud legacy of encouraging young people to be involved,” Warner said. “That stems back to Jennings Randolph, the U.S. Senator from West Virginia, who was responsible for getting 18 year-olds the right to vote all across the United States.”

Students who are 17 years old before November 3, 2019 will be eligible to vote in the primary election in May 2020. Warner insists that even if you are registered, it is a good idea to verify your voter registration information.

“You can change your registration online or check to make sure that you’re registered. You don’t have to register for every election. If you register one time, you’re good to go, just as long as you participate in an election. It takes about seven or eight years to get somebody off of the roles. But this is the date to check it and make sure that everything is up to date.”
