More Rain in Florida

Following West Virginia’s 20-8 win over Pitt Thursday in Florida, the Big East Baseball Tournament was delayed again by rain.    The tarp was brought out prior to the start of the South Florida/Connecticut game and as another heavy thunderstorm rolled through.    The tournament is already backed up as that UConn/South Florida game was scheduled for Wednesday.      The two games scheduled for Thursday are losers bracket games between St. John’s and Notre Dame and between the Mountaineers and the South Florida/UConn loser.     It doesn’t look good for the rest of today or tomorrow for that matter.

Game one Thursday at the Big East Baseball Tournament is in the books.   It was actually a suspended game from Wednesday night as top seed Louisville beat Notre Dame 12-2.   Louisville is the first team in the tournament off to a 2-0 Start.   The Cardinals started Big East Pitcher of the Year Justin Marks.   He threw the three innings Wednesday night as he finished with 52 pitches.  That should allow Louisville to bring him back later in the tournament.

The WVU/Pitt elimination game is scheduled to begin at 12:25.

The schedule for the rest of the day looks like this:

Connecticut will play South Florida at approximately 5 p.m.  Both of those teams are 1-0.    That will be the last of the make-up games.

The first game originally scheduled for Thursday will begin at about 8 p.m. as St. John’s takes on Notre Dame in an elimination game.     The final game originally set for Thursday is an elimination game between the UConn/South Florida loser against the WVU/Pitt winner.   It is unclear at this point if that game will be played tonight or tomorrow.

We have experienced three solid days of rain in Florida this week and the area where the Big East baseball tournament is being played isn’t even getting the full brunt of the wetness.   Areas up near Jacksonville have received 12-23 inches of rain since Monday.    More is on the way.   A strong system from the Gulf of Mexico is moving up the coast toward Clearwater.   That is the same direction the rain came from Wednesday night to knock out the last game and a half.    A huge storm system is currently gathering off the eastern coast of the state.   That one stretches all the way back to Cuba.

They actually have play underway at the tournament today as Louisville and Notre Dame are trying to finish up a winner’s bracket game.   The Mountaineers and Pitt are scheduled for a noon start time today (Thursday.)    It is an elimination game as both teams lost their first round games.    WVU dropped a 6-1 decision to Connecticut on Tuesday.   Pitt lost 12-2 to South Florida on Wednesay morning.
