Name change for Alderson-Broaddus College

Alderson-Broaddus College in Barbour County will go by a new name starting later this year.

On Saturday, AB’s Board of Trustees officially signed off the change to Alderson Broaddus University.

School officials say the name change reflects the efforts being taken in Philippi to expand the scope of the educational offerings.

“This is a momentous day in the history of Alderson-Broaddus,” said Board Chairman Ron Burbick in a statement.  “Changing to University will give Alderson Broaddus a name that reflects its character and status among schools of higher education.”

The school started out as two separate institutions, Broaddus College and Alderson Academy and Junior College, that merged in 1932.

The name change will become official on July 1st.  A campus celebration for the change is scheduled for September 2nd.
