Southern Report: Week 3

Huntington (2-0) at Beckley (1-1)

Beckley went into the game last week with rival Greenbrier East looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss in Week 1 to Winfield. Beckley did bounce back by putting up 52 points and 468 yards of total offense in the game. But the turning point came defensively as linebacker Troy Lilly tackled Greenbrier East running back Dalton Cline in the end zone for a safety, giving Beckley an early 8-7.

Beckley then went on to outscore East 18-6 the rest of the way in the first half, taking control of the game. It was a record setting performance for both teams in the game, as Greenbrier East quarterback Isaiah Kinder threw for a school record 376 yards on 21 of 40 passing.

For Beckley, junior quarterback Brent Osborne tied a school record with four passing touchdowns, a mark that was set last year by Andrew Johnson. Receiver Donte Nabors also tied a school record with 129 yards receiving, a record that was set just last week by Chase Hancock. Osborne finished the night with 274 yards on 16 of 26 passing with those four touchdown passes, and he also added a rushing score as well.

Speaking of the running game, Beckley got the running game going as Troy Lilly led the way with 95 yards on nine carries while Chase Hancock added 83 yards on just five carries. Chase also added 114 yards in receiving in the game to give him 197 yards of total offense.

This week, Beckley will face its toughest test of the season as the Huntington Highlanders come to Van Meter Stadium. Huntington is sitting at 2-0 on the season and is coming off another impressive performance in defeating Spring Valley last week 40-6.

In the game, Huntington’s defense was the story as the Highlanders held Spring Valley to just 170 yards of total offense. On the offensive side of the ball, running back Paden Christian rushed for 114 yards on 14 carries, and Charles Crawford rushed for 85 yards.

This will be the 15thmeeting for these two teams. Beckley has won eight of the previous 14 meetings, but Huntington has won the last two years. Since 2000, Beckley is 8-3 against Huntington.

Game time is set for 7:30pm and it is Hall of Fame Night as well for Beckley as the Flying Eagles will induct Gary Nichols, Kelly Adkins and Alan Manning into the Hall of Fame. You can listen to the game beginning at 6:00pm on 99.5 WJLS and WJLS.com.

Greenbrier East (1-1) at Shady Spring (0-2)

Greenbrier East will be making a second trip over on I-64 to Raleigh County as the Spartans take on the Shady Spring Tigers. Last week, East traveled to Beckley, a game that saw the Spartans rack up 466 yards of offense but committed 3 turnovers and had over 200 yards in penalties in a 52-35 loss. Quarterback Isaiah Kinder threw for 376 yards and three scores while WR Kamen Reynolds had 6 receptions for 151 yards.

For Shady Spring, it has been a tough start to the season as the Tigers are still looking for their first points of the season. Last week, Shady was shutout 39-0 to Logan after falling 69-0 in week one to Princeton.

In the game last week for Logan, Matthew Cox led the way on the ground with 92 yards on seven carries. For Shady, Tyler Hanson had 53 yards on seven carries to lead the way for the Tigers. Neither team could get anything going through the air as Ryan Miller and Noah Corbet were a combined 9 for 13 for 84 yards for Logan, while Timmy Culicerto was 6 for 15 for 39 yards for Shady Spring.

Greenbrier East and Shady Spring will battle Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

Meadow Bridge (2-0) at Midland Trail (1-1)

For the second week in a row, the Midland Trail Patriots will battle a team from Fayette County. Last Week, the Patriots lost to Fayetteville 52-6, a game that saw the 12 game losing streak by Fayetteville snapped. Midland Trail struggled offensively all night as the Patriots were only able to get 94 yards of total offense led by Christian McGuire who rushed for close to half of the yards as he rushed for 45 yards on 11 carries.

The Meadow Bridge Wildcats last week traveled to Naugatuck to battle the Tug Valley Panthers, coming away with a 32-14 win to improve to 2-0 on the season.
