EMS conference focusing on quality

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Emergency Service workers from across West Virginia are in Charleston this weekend. The West Virginia Emergency Medical Service Coalition conference is being held at the Marriott. The three-day event focuses both on the medical providers and management.

Coalition President Paul Seamann said it’s all about making sure they are providing what the public needs.

“We’re discussing ways to improve the care we are providing our patients and also better management ideas and how to improve the quality of EMS overall in our state,” he explained.

More than 100 emergency care providers are taking part in the event. The coalition has brought in state and national speakers to address 12 topics from ways to save lives to how to manage an EMS operation. Seamann said the goal is to provide the participants with the most up to date information. That meant a change in one of their topics.

“We’re having topics on Ebola just to get whatever is the latest to make sure we get that information out!”

There are also vendors at the conference showing off the latest emergency equipment.

The technology in medicine continues to evolve all the time. I was looking around and I think I’m pretty up on new technology but I’ve seen things that I haven’t seen before,” said Seamann.

He hopes the participants take what they learn and share it with others.

“The ideal scenario is that they spread it to not only their agency but the agencies in their areas.”

The conference wraps up Saturday.
