MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — High scoring and blowouts dominated week nine of the high school football season throughout the state. In all, 19 teams scored at least 50 points.

The top two ranked teams in Class AAA combined to outscore their opponents 155-14 on Friday night.

No. 1 Capital (7-0) made up for its unexpected off-week last week, scoring 84 first-half points in a 91-14 win over Nitro (1-7). Capital quarterback Tyrhee Pratt finished 5 of 7 passing for 178 yards and four touchdowns in the win.

No. 2 Point Pleasant (9-0), meanwhile, finished its regular season with a 64-0 shutout of Shady Spring (2-6). Big Blacks’ running back Cody Mitchell rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns in the win, while quarterback Aden Yates added 56 yards through the air and a touchdown. Yates also returned an interception 32 yards for another score.

The Northside Automotive Game of the Week in Class AAA ended up as a 28-point win for No. 4 Cabell Midland (8-1) — the Knights beat rival No. 7 Spring Valley (7-2) 42-14. Cabell Midland scored the final three touchdowns of the second half to pull away for the win.

Cabell Midland running back Alex Childers finished with 170 yards on the ground in the win, eclipsing the 1,400 yard mark on the season. He scored one rushing touchdown added another receiving score for the Knights. Caperton Humphrey added 94 yards on the ground and three touchdowns as well in the win.

“We played really good in the second half,” said Cabell Midland coach Luke Salmons. “I thought Alex Childers did great and he does every week. He’s a tough kid and a hard runner – he leads by example.

“Our defense did a really good job against the run,” Salmons continued. “Their quarterback is a good player and he made plays, but we were physical and I thought everyone did a nice job defensively for us.”

No. 3 University (8-1) held off a pesky No. 14 Preston team (5-3) 29-25. The Hawks trailed at the half 17-14, but bounced back to pull out the win in the second half. Sophomore fullback Isaiah Utt returned from injury for University (injured in week two), adding 96 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries in the win.

“That was probably one of the best games I’ve ever been involved in,” said University coach John Kelley. “You had a team come in here that was desperate, good and very hungry – they played their hearts out. We didn’t make an adjustment at halftime, we just simply said we had to give better effort.”

That better effort included containing talented Preston running back Josiah Nuse who had close to a 100 yards rushing going into the break. University will close out its regular season next week in the MoHawk against rival Morgantown. The Mohigans (4-5) on Friday night picked up a must-win over John Marshall (4-4) 21-6.

No. 6 Martinsburg (8-1) pounded No. 9 Jefferson (5-3) 51-12 after trailing briefly in the first half 12-10. The Bulldogs led 17-12 at the break and pulled away in the second stanza, scoring 41 straight points overall. Martinsburg finished with 347 total yards in the game — it was the Bulldogs’ 41st straight win against a West Virginia opponent.

The two teams went scoreless in the first two overtime sessions. In the third overtime, George Washington added a 23-yard field goal to take a 24-21 lead. Three plays later, it was Parkersburg’s Corey Burdette taking the ball in for the game winning touchdown.

The Big Reds close out the season with games against Riverside and rival Parkersburg South. George Washington, which has now lost three straight, has games remaining against Ripley and Capital.

No. 8 Wheeling Park suffered its second loss of the season, falling to Steubenville (OH) 42-21.
